June is Internet Safety Month

77 million children have regular access to the internet. And, of those children that use it regularly, 20% report receiving some type of sexual approach or solicitation in the past year. In addition, one in seventeen children report being harassed online in the past year. But a small fraction of those sexual solicitations and harassments are ever reported to law enforcement or internet service providers.

Because June is Internet Safety Month, it might be a good time to talk to your children about internet safety and inappropriate content and websites. Make sure you have a plan in place if your child receives a threat or solicitation, so that they will know who to contact and what to do.
