Social Networking Safety

Although you’re trying to be safe online by keeping your personal information private on the social networking sites that you use, a couple of guys at FBHive recently demonstrated that they could hack into a private Facebook account fairly easily and view information that should have only been visible to “friends.”

Although, the hackers did it to prove a point and alerted Facebook to the loopholes they had used (blogging about the experience), the easy with which they were able to access the information underscores the fact that you should avoid posting personal information about yourself that you wouldn’t want 50 million people to see.

Information like a birth date (with year), full home address, and phone number, can be used for nefarious purposes, like identity theft. Keep this information private by not posting it to social networking sites, and making sure your children are doing the same.

Special thanks to the iKeepSafe blog for the tip.
